South Korea Reverses Controversial Gaming-Related Law
There has been a big push in specific Asian countries to curb video game consumption, especially for their underage population. South Korea was one of those countries. Ten years ago, they created a “shutdown law” that banned children under the age of sixteen from playing games for the six hour block after midnight. Recently, the government decided to rescind this law.
The Youth Protection Revision Act was enacted in November 2011. From 12am to 6am, minors were not allowed to play to video game. The idea was to ensure they would get at least six hours of sleep. Initially geared towards PC gaming, this law also affected consoles such as Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox. Companies themselves could be fined up $8,560 and even prison time. Abolishing this law comes from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in tandem with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The agencies recognize the need for leisure activities and online socializing. The ministries aimed to a “choice system” that can be catered for specific families. The parents or legal guardian can work with their child to create specific windows for gaming. The goal ultimately aims to provide children with more agency over themselves on their decisions. They see video game as a component of development not a restriction.
Video games are continuing to develop and be part of our world in various ways. As more is learned about their impact, an emphasis on proper use is also growing. The root of these laws can make sense, however, developing a healthy relationship with video games is most important.
