CONSOLE NEWS

Valve Announces First Handheld Gaming PC

Source: dotesports.com

Valve has just announced its new gaming device, the Steam Deck. It's been rumored to come out for a long time now, so the announcement isn't the biggest surprise, but it is a welcome one. It's very similar to the Switch in its design but has slightly thicker handles like a game controller. The console is announced to ship out in December, and preorder reservations are open today at 1pm EST. As for pricing, the starting price is at a solid $399, similar to a lot of consoles out there. There will also be models you can buy at $529 and $649.

Taking a look at the specs, Team Red will drive the console with an AMD APU and a quad-core Zen 2 CPU with 8 threads and 8 compute units worth of graphics, as well as 16 GB of RAM. The storage tiers are what dictate the price differences from above, with 64 GB being the cheapest and 512GB being the most expensive. You can also add in an SD card into the microSD card slot if you'd like more storage on your device. The Steam Deck also has a wide menagerie of different control options. There are two thumbsticks, trackpads, ABXY buttons, a D-pad, a 7-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen, gyroscope for motion controls, two shoulder triggers on each side, four back buttons, and of course microphones.

Basically, this console is an entire Linux computer, which will allow users to move over to the Linux desktop from their computer. It will also be able to support a mouse, monitor, and keyboard, as well as allow you to install other game stores, browse the web, and add PC software. Will this new device hold a candle to the current consoles? The world may never know (just kidding, we'll absolutely know in the future.)

Bethesda's QuakeCon has finally set a start date for its 2021 at home convention, August 19th. The official kickoff will be at 2pm EST, though we're still uncertain as to what will be done for that part of the event. As with 2020, the convention will still be converted so it's all online, and of course have tons of epic content. The con will have a slew of game announcements, updates, charity events, influencers and streamers, and of course just gaming community fun.

Bethesda is well known for using QuakeCon for charity organizations from all walks of life. Some of this year's partners are Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Trevor Project, and UNICEF. While the event will have lots of free to attend events, they do encourage that you donate what you can to efforts like these while you game.

More details are soon to come for the event, but until then be sure to keep an eye out for potential hints and spoilers for what games and things may be announced!
